Natural Environment Teaching: A New Approach.

Natural Environment Teaching (NET) is quickly becoming the preferred method of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) interventions, and for good reason. NET focuses on more organic, child-led opportunities for learning, rather than the traditional, contrived, clinical settings. Providers who successfully implement NET sessions must have strong play skills, the ability to build rapport and pair with the child, and are quick thinking when it comes to data-collection and observation. As a result, it can be hard to find companies that do this model well. Providing productive NET sessions can be challenging, but when done properly, I’ve seen this approach have better outcomes for every family.

ABA therapy has been used poorly for too long, it’s time to change that. By using the NET approach, following the child’s lead, and responding to their body language, requests, and interests a child can have incredible results. Behavior therapy can lead to a higher quality of life through functional communication skills, emotional regulation, decision-making, and self-management.

As a parent coach, I will always use the principles of NET with my families. My primary concern is meeting your child in their area of comfort, connecting through their interests, and engaging in games and activities that have meaning to them. I will also use these principles when guiding you through your parenting strategies.
